Burn Permits

Burn Permits & Open Burning

Open burning in the Estancia area and Torrance County is regulated by the New Mexico Environment Department and local fire authority. Before conducting any open burn, residents must obtain the appropriate permits and follow all safety requirements.

When Is a Burn Permit Required?

  • All open burns of vegetation, brush, or yard debris
  • Agricultural burns
  • Land clearing operations
  • Campfires on private property during high fire danger periods

How to Obtain a Permit

Contact the Torrance County Manager office or the Estancia Fire Department for current burn permit requirements. Permits may be suspended during periods of high fire danger or drought conditions. Always check current conditions before burning.

Safe Burning Practices

  • Never leave a fire unattended
  • Keep a water source and shovel nearby
  • Do not burn on windy days (winds above 15 mph)
  • Maintain a cleared area around burn site
  • Burn only natural vegetation — no trash, plastics, or construction materials
  • Notify the fire department before starting large burns
